Now that my wife has a pedometer (which I purchased for Xmas) she is trying to achieve the goal of walking 10,000 steps per day.  Why 10,000?  Who knows?  If it looks like she's not going to make the goal she walks or runs in place like a mentally disturbed person.  After such a fit she makes me look at the device to demonstrate that another 20 or so steps have been counted off.  She is walking off to nowhere, counting every step.  Hurray!
